The Adventure

Southern Africa has a number of wild areas, but undoubtedly the ones that stand out above the rest are Moremi, Chobe and Savuti in Botswana. These magnificent parks are world renowned for their wide diversity of both fauna and flora. To spend time in these parks is an experience of a lifetime.

The best way to do this is in the comfort of your own vehicle and camping in the primitive but interesting campsites. We have put together a guided self-drive safari into these wonderful areas so that you and your family can experience the unspoiled African bush first hand. The absolute beauty and diversity of the ecosystems we will encounter will amaze you all, and the real “Wild African” game viewing experience will be enhanced by the unfenced campsites and the limited size of the group.

The Team

Your tour leader, Bernie, is an experienced nature conservationist and adventure guide. He will be in radio contact with you at all times and impart a wealth of biological, cultural, historic and four-wheel drive knowledge. Three meals a day will be prepared by our experienced bush chef in his mobile kitchen, with fresh salads, potjiekos, braai’s and many other surprises appearing on the menu. The good old “koffie pot” will be on the fire from six till late. Our logistics crew will pitch and take down the camps at all the overnight stops we visit. Tents, tables, and chairs are provided by Mega World 4x4 Adventures. This is not a very “technical” 4x4 trip, but should you experience any difficulty, the Mega World crew do have the “know how” and recovery equipment to assist with most off-road problems. Though our bush-camps will be interesting and rustic, you will at all times be safe, the crew will spare no effort to make you comfortable, provide you with good wholesome food and most importantly, see that you have a good time. Adventure Itinerary

Day 1

We meet at Toro Safari Lodge near the town of Kasane in the late afternoon. It is very important not to arrive after dark as the road between Nata and Kasane is full of game at night. This campsite situated on the banks of the Chobe River, will be a welcome sight after a long day’s drive. When you arrive our logistics crew will already have put up your tent and this will be the norm for the rest of the tour. You will get to meet the most important person on the crew, our chef, who will already be creating the first of the many wholesome meals that he will be conjuring up in his mobile field kitchen. As we sit on the banks of the Chobe River and watch the sunset with the hippo snorting and grunting in the background, Bernie will elaborate on the adventure that is to follow.

Day 2

After your first open fire breakfast, it is time to enjoy a leisurely game drive in the Chobe National Park in game viewing vehicles, so everybody has the same opportunity for game sightings. This normally lasts about 3 hours. After a light lunch you have the chance of exploring Kasane and also to restock before we leave early the next morning. We regroup at 15:00 to enjoy one of the highlights the trip, the afternoon boat cruise on the Chobe River. Here we normally have good sightings of elephant, buffalo, lechwe, hippo, crocodiles etc. We then head back to camp and enjoy a wonderful meal prepared by our bush chef and relax around the camp fire.

Day 3

After a good but exciting night we have breakfast and pack up. Our destination is the Savuti area in the center of the park. Our route takes us from the lush green riverine habitat into the dryer mopani veld. We arrive at the Savuti campsite in time for a light lunch. The mornings drive is quite strenuous through very thick sand so we take a very leisurely drive into the Savuti mash grasslands in the afternoon.

Here we hope to see plains game, Corribustards and if we are lucky Cheetah. This is a very dry area since the Savuti River stopped flowing into it about twenty years ago. We will visit two artificial water holes that are usually teaming with game at this time of the year.
We head further south to our next campsite for the next three nights at Mankwe Lodge situated in a large hunting concession bordering Moremi. The camp sites are set far apart from each other thus we will not be disturbed by any other people. After settling in, we enjoy dinner once more and relax around the camp fire.

Day 4

After breakfast we take a drive all along the cutline bordering Moremi in a northerly direction to the Kwai River area. As there are no fences around the park the game around this area can be prolific especially around the Kwai area. We will spend the largest part of our day in this area enjoying lunch in the shade of the trees and watching animals come down to drink late afternoon. We then head back to camp to relax again and enjoy another hearty meal prepared by our experienced bush chef.

Day 5

After an early morning breakfast we head south on the cutline from Mankwe and on to South gate where we enter Moremi. From south gate we start to explore this wonderful piece of paradise. We drive via third bridge onto Xakanaka boat station where we take a cruise on an aluminum boat in the channels of the delta to get a better idea of the enormity of this paradise.
After lunch we drive on to North gate and via the northern part of the Kwai River on to our camp at Mankwe. This is indeed a full day of driving with lots to see and enjoy and may mean we get back to camp after dark, tired but satisfied! We then enjoy dinner again.

Day 6

We leave the parks and head for Maun where we can refuel with our credit cards again in preparation for our homeward journey. Our final night is spent in a campsite about 30km out of Maun, the camp has a swimming pool, a cash bar and very good ablution facilities, which after our dust travels will be appreciated by all. We spend our last night around the campfire enjoying the unique bond of friendship that can only be made by fellow travelers who, together have experience the magic of the African Bush.

Day 7

Sadly after breakfast we say our goodbyes and head for home until our next adventure together.
